In poker, players compete to make the best five-card “hand” using a combination of their own two cards and the five community cards that are dealt in a round. After the first round of betting, players reveal their cards and place additional bets if they want to increase their chances of winning the pot. If a player wants to add money to the pot, they must say “raise,” which will trigger a series of bets from other players. The other players can either raise the same amount or call the raise. Players may also choose to check, which means that they will pass on the chance to bet or call a bet.
