A casino, as the name implies, is a place where games of chance are played. They are also very noisy, and it is not uncommon to hear conversations in several different languages.<\/p>\n
In the 1990s, casinos significantly increased their use of technology for security reasons as well as to monitor game results and ensure fairness. Some have elaborate surveillance systems, with cameras in the ceiling that can be aimed to focus on specific tables or other suspicious patrons, and which can be monitored from a room filled with banks of video screens. Some casinos also have catwalks on the roof that allow security personnel to look down directly on the casino floor through one-way mirrors.<\/p>\n
Casinos are businesses, and they make money by taking a percentage of all bets placed on their games. The house edge on any particular game may be relatively low, less than two percent, but it adds up quickly as players bet billions of dollars on each other\u2019s actions. This advantage gives casinos enough revenue to build spectacular hotels, fountains and pyramids, as well as replicas of famous landmarks.<\/p>\n
Casinos are also profitable by offering comps to their high-volume players, such as free hotel rooms, meals, tickets to shows and even limo service and airline tickets. These incentives are based on the amount of time and money spent playing the games, as well as the type of games played. Some casinos also pay out winnings to their players with cash or merchandise.
